1147 TC 718TC1 image#718TC1, 3c Summer Olympics, large die trial color proof on wove paper, in carmine, die sunk on full size card measuring 154x202mm, a magnificent large die trial color proof from the Eissler collection, possessing a marvelous freshness that is often lacking in large die proofs, with full unblemished card without any spots or toning to detract, most impressive is the brilliant carmine color that has much more fire in it than the issued purple color, a delightful proof of this immensely popular Olympic collecting area, extremely fine; John Eissler was a vignette engraver at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the proofs that were in his collection are large die proofs that are characterized by having the original blue control number removed and a black five-digit number applied, it is through designers such as Eissler, C.A. Brooks and M.D. Fenton that collectors are able to own some of the beautiful and rare proofs that were made in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing; this single proof is the only example known of a trial color of any of the Olympic Games issues in private hands; V.S. McCloskey, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70020; ex-Eissler, Morris Rosen. (Image) $10,000.00

1148 P 719P1a image#719P1a, 5c Summer Olympics, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 153x202mm, this being the special proof prepared for President F.D Roosevelt; a pristine and extraordinarily attractive large die proof, included in the collection of die proofs that were prepared for President Roosevelt covering the period from 1894 until early in 1933, this being one of the last issues prepared for this collection, this proof has retained its extraordinary excellent condition being fresh and crisp without spots or blemishes, extremely fine; "From the Franklin D. Roosevelt Collection/Auctioned Feb., April, 1945 by H.R. Harmer Inc., N.Y." handstamp on the reverse; this proof is one of two known to be in collectors' hands, the other being the off card Southgate large die proof on wove paper, this proof, when first offered, was described as being on India, yet as early as 1984 it was described in a Greg Manning auction as being on wove paper, and when this was last offered in the 1997 Matthew Bennett sale of the Morris Rosen Olympic collection it was also correctly described as being on wove paper realizing a record price of $17,500.00 plus the buyer's premium, this realization was surely the basis for the current Scott $15,000.00 valuation, which they still placed under India, it is our opinion that there are no India proofs of this issue or of this period in private hands and they may not even exist in the files of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing; V.S. McCloskey, designer; L.S. Schofield, vignette engraver; control number 334309 (1933); ex-F.D. Roosevelt, Morris Rosen. (Image) Est. 15,000-20,000
