JAMAICA USED IN CAYMAN ISLANDS continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
2021 c S.G. #Z8 imageS.G. #Z8, 2 1/2p Dull purple and blue, tied to large portion of a cover to Provincetown, Mass. by an especially clear strike of the black "Grand Cayman/P.O./MY 3 1895" c.d.s. Type Z2 Georgetown pmk., Kingston, Jamaica transit c.d.s. and Provincetown backstamp, cover has been strongly reduced at left with tears to the reverse and a portion of the backflap missing, quite attractive from the front with only mild edge wear and a faint corner crease to the stamp, very fine appearance; this cancel is found in both violet and black but our observations are that the black cancel is much scarcer than the violet, especially since this is a very early usage of this postmark, an extremely rare cover with only a few examples known, and especially choice with this excellent strike of the Type Z2 postmark of Georgetown in black; ex-Green (Scott #A12). (Image) Est. 4,000-5,000

SOLD for $4,750.00
Will close during Public Auction
2022 O S.G. #Z19 imageS.G. #Z19, 1p Rose with thick "Official" overprint, tied to small piece by purple single-circle Grand Cayman Type Z2 c.d.s. pmk. of Georgetown showing portions of both "Grand" and and "Cayman", dated 1895, stamp is well centered and fresh with bright color, very fine; an exceedingly rare official stamp used with this Cayman Islands cancel of which only a couple of examples are known; 1983 David Brandon certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A15; $4,400.00). (Image) £3,750

SOLD for $3,250.00

2023 O S.G. #Z20 imageS.G. #Z20, 2p Grey with thick "Official" overprint, tied to piece by purple single-circle Grand Cayman c.d.s., the Type Z2 pmk. of Georgetown, showing nearly all of "Grand" in the cancel, a very early strike of this postmark being dated February, 1895, an exceptionally attractive stamp with rich color, very fine; another exceptionally rare official stamp with only a couple of examples recorded used with this Cayman Islands Type Z2 cancel; 1983 David Brandon certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A16; $4,500.00). (Image) £3,750

SOLD for $6,250.00

2024 O S.G. #Z10a imageS.G. #Z10a, 1/2p Green, fresh single with the rich color of this green shade, large portion of bold and remarkably well struck double-circle Grand Cayman Type Z3 c.d.s. pmk. of Georgetown, showing full "Grand" of "Grand Cayman" and full "Cayman" of "Cayman Islands", dated October 11, 1900, very fine; remarkably scarce with this strong clear cancel; 1971 RPS certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A17; $550.00). (Image) £475

SOLD for $675.00

2025 c S.G. #Z11 imageS.G. #Z11, 1p Purple and mauve, two singles tied to cover to Richmond, Jamaica by single full strike of double-circle "Grand Cayman/Cayman Islands/14 DE 99" c.d.s., the Type Z3 pmk. of Georgetown, a similarly nice strike on the reverse, Kingston transit and backstamped Richmond, stamps are well centered, the cover has been reduced at left and has edge faults around barely affecting a few perf. tips on the right stamp, a fine cover; at this period covers from the Cayman Islands could be sent to Jamaica at domestic British rates, making this an unusually rare double rate cover, this also explains the edge faults which were undoubtedly caused by a large enclosure within a none too sturdy envelope; covers with Jamaican stamps are of great rarity regardless of condition and it is thought that only seven covers are recorded with the double-circle Type Z3 postmark from the Cayman Islands with Jamaican stamps; ex-Green (Scott #A18). (Image) Est. 3,000-4,000

SOLD for $2,300.00
Will close during Public Auction
2026 O S.G. #Z12 imageS.G. #Z12, 1p Red, with central and nearly full strike of "Grand Cayman/Cayman Islands/23 OC 00" double-circle c.d.s., the Type Z3 pmk. of Georgetown, slight water staining causing the color to run a bit as often occurs with this value, very fine and scarce with this nicely stuck cancel; clear 1971 RPS certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A19; $575.00). (Image) £500

SOLD for $525.00
Will close during Public Auction
2027 O S.G. #Z13 imageS.G. #Z13, 2 1/2p Dull purple and blue, crisp single with excellent strike of the double-circle Grand Cayman Type Z3 c.d.s. pmk. of Georgetown, showing full "Cayman Islands" from the bottom of the cancel, dated January 10, 1899, choice very fine; exceptionally scarce with this clear and well struck cancel; 1971 RPS certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A20; $800.00). (Image) £700

SOLD for $800.00
Will close during Public Auction
2028 c S.G. #Z13 imageS.G. #Z13, 2 1/2p Dull purple and blue, a remarkably choice O.H.M.S. cover to England, with a lovely well centered single possessing fresh bright colors, neatly tied by a beautifully struck "Grand Caymans/Cayman Islands/JA 6 99" double circle Type Z3 postmark of Georgetown, one could hardly ask for a clearer strike of this difficult cancel, plus an additional equally well struck example on the reverse, Kingston, Jamaica transit c.d.s. and backstamped Cheltenham, opened out for display, an extremely fine cover in all regards for this Jamaican forerunner; this cover is truly exceptional, not just for its rarity, which is substantial as it is believed that only seven covers with the Type 3 postmark are recorded, but for its remarkable condition, when compared to the vast majority of Cayman Islands covers with Jamaican franking that have been reduced and have all manner of faults, plus often with weak or poorly struck cancels, it is impressive to find a cover that has none of these maladies, a wonderful Cayman Islands forerunner rarity; 1974 BPA certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A20). (Image) Est. 7,500-10,000

SOLD for $19,000.00
Will close during Public Auction
2029 O S.G. #Z21 imageS.G. #Z21, 1/2p Green impressive horizontal pair with virtually full strike of "Cayman Brac/Cayman Islands" boxed handstamp, Type Z4 pmk. and the first cancel used at Stake Bay, Type 1, beautifully clear and sharp impression, very fine; this boxed cancel is the type of temporary postmark that was issued to newly opened post offices in Jamaica, all values are extremely rare with this marking, much more so than the cancels of Georgetown, and this example is particularly desirable on a pair which can show the full marking; ex-Green (Scott #A21; $7,000.00+). (Image) £6,000+

SOLD for $10,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
2030 O S.G. #Z22 imageS.G. #Z22, 1p Purple and mauve a perfectly positioned strike for a single stamp of the Type Z4 pmk. being the first cancel of Stake Bay, Type 1, "(Ca)yman Bra(c/Ca)yman Islands" boxed handstamp shows a large portion of the letters and more than is necessary for easy and positive identification, the stamp is well centered and fresh, very fine and choice; extremely rare with only a few examples known; 1960 BPA certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A22; $3,750.00). (Image) £3,250

SOLD for $3,750.00

2031 c S.G. #Z22 imageS.G. #Z22, 1p Purple and mauve, a lovely fresh single with rich bright colors, neatly tied to cover by vivid and intense strike of the boxed "Cayman Brac/Cayman Islands" handstamp, Type Z4 pmk. being the first cancel of Stake Bay, Type 1, posted locally at Stake Bay and quite likely containing an invitation, reduced at left, though not as much as might appear being a note size envelope, minor edge wrinkles to cover, not affecting the stamp or marking, very fine; mail from this small post office on Cayman Brac is extremely rare and continued to be so even into the early issues of Cayman Islands, but this temporary postmark on a cover with Jamaican franking is a major rarity of Cayman Islands Philately with only seven covers in all believed to exist with this cancel; 1971 BPA certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A22). (Image) Est. 10,000-15,000

SOLD for $10,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
2032 O S.G. #Z24 imageS.G. #Z24, 2 1/2p Dull purple and blue, tied to piece by and absolutely perfect strike of "Cayman Brac/Cayman Islands" boxed handstamp, Type Z4 pmk. and the first cancel used at Stake Bay, Type 1, insignificant gum staining around the perforations, very fine; an excellent example of this extraordinarily rare marking, being one of the very few known on the 2 1/2p value; ex-Meredith, Cooley and Green (Scott #A24; $3,750.00). (Image) £3,250

SOLD for $4,250.00

2033 O S.G. #Z25 imageS.G. #Z25, 1/2p Yellow green, the discovery example of the extraordinarily rare Type Z5 Cayman Brac double-circle c.d.s. of Stake Bay, Type 2, a neat strike of the top left quadrant of the postmark with full "Cayman" and "B" of "Brac" plus other portions of this cancel that confirm that this can only be Cayman Brac, very fine; this is the only known example of the 1/2p value with this cancel, and this value was not listed when the accompanying certificate was issued; 1991 BPA certificate; ex-Green (Scott #A25; $3,750.00). (Image) £3,250

SOLD for $3,750.00

2034 O S.G. #Z26 imageS.G. #Z26, 1p Purple and mauve, possessing a superb central strike of "Cayman Brac/Cayman Islands/JA 6 00" double-circle c.d.s., Type Z5 pmk. being the very rare cancel of Stake Bay, Type 2 small tone spot at left, but very attractive and an extremely fine example of this cancellation; only two examples of this value are recorded, the other also on this very early date of January 6, 1900; ex-Meredith, Green (Scott #A26). (Image) £3,000

SOLD for $8,000.00

2035 O S.G. #Z27 imageS.G. #Z27, 1p Red, a fresh and well centered single tied to piece by light, but easily discernable strike of "Cayman Brac/Cayman Islands/JA 5 01" double-circle c.d.s., Type Z5 pmk. being the very rare cancel of Stake Bay, Type 2, very fine; while the catalog values do not always reflect it, this postmark is the rarest of all the cancellations on Jamaican stamps, even rarer than the boxed Cayman Brac temporary pmk.; this 1p Red is another value of which only two examples have been recorded; ex-Green (Scott #A27; $3,500.00). (Image) £3,000

SOLD for $3,250.00

Cooley collection are recorded; ex-Meredith, Green (Scott #A28; $2,500.00). (Image) £2,500

1891 UNISSUED OVERPRINT ESSAYS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
2037 E imageJamaica 1889 1p Purple and mauve with "Cayman/Islands" overprint in capital letters, an unused single with partial o.g., small gum stains on the reverse showing slightly to the front on a couple perf. tips at top, otherwise very fine; it is believed that this overprint was produced about 1891, the status of this overprint has never been fully determined, but it is believed by students to be an essay or an unissued value produced by the Jamaican Post Office for use in the Cayman Islands which was using Jamaican stamps there at that the time; its legitimacy has long been recognized because of the distinctive type of the first "A" in "Cayman" which shows a foot on the left leg, this same type irregularity is found on the 1/2p Green with thin "Official" overprint (copy enclosed for comparison), the official overprint was produced locally by C. Vendryes of Kingston, also the right upright of the "N" is short, another known type characteristic of this printer; whether an essay or an unissued overprint this example and the used example in the next lot are the only known surviving examples; a marvelous rarity of the early postal history of the Cayman Islands; these two stamps are specifically mentioned in the Stanley Gibbons introduction to Cayman Islands, but are not listed; 1988 Peter Holcombe certificate; ex-Meredith. (Image) Est. 5,000-7,500

SOLD for $6,250.00

2038 E imageJamaica 1889 1p Purple and mauve with "Cayman/Islands" overprint in capital letters, the very rare overprint essay or unissued overprint, an interesting used single with a portion of a Richmond, Jamaica cancel dated May 31, 1897, perforations slightly clipped at bottom, fine; the use of this stamp is shrouded in mystery as much as the overprint itself, this cancel may have been applied by favor or it may have been used by someone who came across the stamp not recognizing the overprint, in any case this example and the unused example in the previous lot are the only known surviving examples of these Cayman Islands rarities; these two stamps are specifically mention in the Stanley Gibbons introduction to Cayman Islandss, but are not listed; photocopy of 1988 Peter Holcombe certificate for the two stamps; ex-Meredith.
