40 TC 11TC5 image#11TC5, 3c Black, trial color proof on stamp paper, an exceptionally rare proof of the 1851 series which are all major rarities, very faint lightened vertical pen stokes which were applied by the printer, Carroll Chase note on reverse states "almost surely plate 4", mostly clear margins to just barely in as is normally the case with these original proofs, fine; this is believed to be one of only three examples recorded, and any of them only very infrequently become available; a wonderful proof for the Three Cent 1851 specialist or the serious proof and essay collector; 2002 PSE certificate; ex-Brazer, Joyce and Piller.
