ERROR LARGE LOTS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
991 nh 538a/2764b #538a/2764b, C23a/J89a, Extensive modern error collection neatly arranged in five binders, includes both color omitted errors and imperforate errors, with catalog values to $1,750.00 (#C114a with a tiny thin), but the value is really in the numerous items cataloging $300.00-$750.00 each, there is only slight duplication and that is often a single and multiple of the same item, in addition to the listed catalog value which only includes Scott-priced items, there are several coil imperforate plate strips that list in Datz for over $6,000.00, plus there is a small number of freaks and varieties which are not listed, one important feature to note is that a large percentage (probably half the items) are accompanied by either a PF or PSE certificate (sometimes both), o.g., nearly all n.h. and with very few exceptions fine-very fine; an exciting opportunity to obtain a large variety of modern errors at one time, many of which are quite elusive. $57,000.00

SOLD for $16,000.00
Will close during Public Auction
992 og/nh imageEye-catching Error, Freak and Oddity large collection arranged on stockpages, includes over 50 Scott-listed errors, most of which are the desirable color-omitted errors, these catalog well in excess of $8,000.00, there are a couple of items that at one time were thought to be rare color-omitted errors, but now are considered to have faint traces of the color present, these include the 22c Bartholdi and the 36c Sikorsky air post, but perhaps the most exciting portion of the collection is in the myriad color shifts and perf. shifts, with over 100 of these, not being the typical minor shifts, but rather dramatic visually striking freaks (see photo for a few samples), o.g., the vast majority n.h., fine-very fine; an exceptional error collection that will retail many multiples of our estimate; fifteen PF, PSE or APS certificates accompany. TITANIC FACING SLIPS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
994 imageTitanic Facing Slip for Sealed Distributions Custom, measuring 75x128mm, imprinted "Sealed Distributions Customs/Second Div. N.Y.P.O. 9/From Sea Post Letters" with the numeral "9" added in blue crayon, postmarked with "Transatlantic Post Office 7/AP 10 12" c.d.s., with additional handstamps of "O.S. Woody", U.S. postal clerk on the R.M.S. "Titanic", and "Titanic" handstamp identifying the ship where this sea post office was located, slight staining at top from exposure to sea water, very fine; the story of Oscar Scott Woody and the "Titanic" has been told many times; Woody, along with two other U.S. postal clerks and two British post office clerks, manned the post office on the R.M.S. "Titanic" and were responsible for handling the mail carried aboard this ill-fated ship which sank after hitting an iceberg on April 15, 1912, all five of these postal workers lost their lives working right up to the end attempting to preserve the mail; four different facing slips, instructional slips used for bound packages of sorted mail to be directed in different ways, were found on the body of Oscar Woody and salvaged with his few personal affects, these were prepared by Mr. Woody as the ship sailed on April 10, 1912; these facing slips are among the very few artifacts that were ever recovered relating to the postal history of this disaster; the facing slip offered here and the one in the next lot are two of only four slips that have been recovered, all of which are unique; a great postal history rarity. (Image) Est. $5,000-7,500

995 imageTitanic Facing Slip for Washington, D.C., measuring 79x126mm, imprinted "Washington D.C./From Sea Post Letters", bearing an extraordinarily clear "Transatlantic Post Office 7/AP 10 12" c.d.s. pmk., plus well struck "O.S. Woody" and "Titanic" handstamps, extremely fine; another one of four unique facing slips prepared by Oscar S. Woody and recovered from his pocket when his body was found because he was wearing a life preserver; an ironic human element of this human tragedy was that Oscar Woody and his fellow postal workers were celebrating his 44th birthday when the "Titanic" hit the iceberg and they spent the next hours until their death in the futile effort to salvage the mail; of the four slips this example is the best preserved showing hardly any affects of salt water that affected to some degree the other three; a great rarity of extraordinarily high quality from the R.M.S. "Titanic" (Image) Est. $5,000-7,500
