1898 2c Black, blue and carmine Imperial Penny Postage, single along with 1c Green (Unitrade #75) tied to page of a Post Office bulk mail receipt book for the
payment of 3c postage for the mailing of three pounds of newspapers, each tied by "Brantford/Ont./JA 27 99" c.d.s., on the reverse of this page is a similar receipt with a horizontal strip of four and four singles of the 5c Dark blue on bluish "Maple
Leaf" to pay 40c for 40 pounds of newspapers, all cancelled by the same town's c.d.s. of February 22, 1899, very fine; payment books from which this page was taken were only used by companies that had newspapers to mail, on each mailing they applied
stamps at the rate of 1c per pound and the stamps were cancelled at the post office where the papers were mailed, the book being retained by the sender as receipt of payment, since very few mailers used these books and most were destroyed, few have
come into the hands of collectors; the page offered here is the finer of only two known examples with 2c Map franking; a most unusual and rare posting for the specialist; illustrated on page 12 of Winmill; ex-Bain (Unitrade #86). (Image) |

tied by beautiful strike of "Shannonville/Ont./AP 20 99" type 1 squared circle cancel, backstamped Toronto, an extremely fine postmark on a very fine cover; the type 1 squared circle pmks. were only used in a very few towns, this being a scarcer town
(rated scarcity B by Winmill), but of much greater significance is the magnificent quality of the strike of which Winmill states "Probably the finest existing Map squared circle cover (in terms of strike)"; a lovely cover and rare thus; illustrated
on page 26 of Winmill (Unitrade #86). (Image) |

posted to Newfoundland with "Toronto/Jun 21 1899" flag cancel, "Returned for /Postage" handstamp applied since the rate was 2c, a 2c Map stamp was then applied and tied by "Toronto, Canada/S. Depot/JU 22 99" duplex making it now 1c overpaid,

stamp of the strip is damaged plus some staining, still a fine and very rare usage with this being the only cover with the largest number of nine 2c Map stamps on one cover (Unitrade #86). (Image) |

1p Black and carmine Society for the Propagation of the Gospel label, a most interesting lithographed label appearing like a postage stamp and bearing a striking
resemblance to the 2c Imperial Penny Postage issue of Canada, inscription at top reads "The S.P.G. World" and "Upon which the Sun Never Sets" at bottom, the map shows the Western Hemisphere at left as opposed to the stamp which puts it (including
Canada) in the middle, the purpose of the illustration is also similar with the red color showing the societies involvement around the the world, the label is without gum and very fine; also includes an original photographic essay of the main black
portion of the design with blank inscription and value tablets, very fine; this society is one of the major Anglican voluntary missionary societies founded in 1701, the origin of this label is not known but it is presumed to have been produced
approximately contemporaneous to the 1898 2c Canadian stamp from which it obviously adapted its design; Mr. Fawn in his 30 years of researching and collecting this issue has never seen another example of either the label or the essay and believes
them to be the only recorded examples; certainly a fascinating addition to any collection of the Two Cent Map stamp. (imagea)

1899 Toronto Industrial Fair and Exhibition medal, a one ounce high relief medal produced for this exhibition in the first year that the Imperial Penny Postage
was put into use, to commemorate that event the reverse is inscribed "Imperial Penny Postage" and has an illustration of a postman superimposed over the design of the 2c Map stamp in the background, on the obverse are arms and symbols of
Canada and inscribed "Industrial Exhibition/Association of Toronto", this example is cast in bronze as revealed by its finely mottled surfaces, but highly detailed and showing virtually no wear, also possessing an attractive golden patina, extremely
fine; such an interesting medal that so directly related to the stamp he collected caused Mr. Fawn to make an extensive search for this medal, he turned up only this example and the same medal die struck in copper in the next lot, these are the
only two he has ever seen in all his years of collecting and their inclusion in Mr. Fawn's exhibition collection was greatly appreciated at FIP World Exhibitions; an extremely rare medal. (Image) |

1899 Toronto Industrial Fair and Exhibition medal, a similar high relief medal to the previous lot with the same design on front and back, this example appears to be
die struck in a soft copper alloy with smooth surfaces, electric blue-violet toning on the reverse around the stamp design, some wear and denting, especially around the the rim, due to the soft nature of the metal, otherwise very fine; this and the
previous example being the only examples that we are aware. (Image) |
