Colorado City was founded on May 22nd 1859 by Colorado Town Company, a group of pioneers from Denver and Auraria. They claimed land near Ute Pass leading to the gold discoveries at Fair Play and Hamilton in South Park. The post office opened May 24th 1860 in Kansas Territory.
