1303       image"Ft Lupton C.T., Sep 15 / 65". Manuscript postmark ties 3¢ rose (65), wide margins with right s.e., on small cover to Springfield Ill.; 3¢ light pre-use crease, reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F., one of only a few known postmarks from Fort Lupton, illustrated in Jarrett's Colorado book., ex-Jarrett.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

This early fur trading post was established in 1836 on the south side of the South Platte River. It was revived as a stage stop on the road to Denver and obtained a post office in January 1861 while still part of Nebraska Territory. It became part of Colorado Territory the next month.

Storage, Forwarding and Commission Merchants" corner card, blue oval Paid handstamp, original enclosed merchant letter inquires about collecting $335 due from Mr. Roley now living in Tellurium, Very Fine and choice.

Garland was established in Costilla county just west of La Veta Pass in 1858. The settlers in the valley needed protection from the roaming Ute tribe in the valley. The area was at one time in the New Mexico Territory, however, after the survey in 1861 became part of the Colorado Territory.

Cds with red manuscript "Paid" rating on fresh orange cover to Ripon Wis., original 1868 enclosure with interesting content "…In Central City about two weeks ago a (man) poisoned his wife…some four or five years ago I wrote to you that I was going to get married and the girl rather played off on me. That was the same girl and (on) her dying bed she told her mother that she would like to see me and talk to me but I was twenty miles away and she did not send for me…I can forgive her…but let her go to the place where she may enjoy everlasting bliss or anything else", Very Fine.

This unusual stampless use is probably due to a temporary shortage of stamps. This is the earliest recorded use of this postmark.

1306       imageGeorgetown, Colo, Nov 22. (Jarrett No. 116) cds ties 1¢ blue (63) on locally addressed drop letter; reduced slightly at right, Very Fine and scarce Colorado Territorial use, ex-Pacetti.

The Georgetown, Colorado post office was established on June 18, 1866. This cancel was used between May 2nd 1870 and October 18, 1875, which would make this a late use of the 1861 1¢ issue.

1307       imageGreeley C.T., June 6. Manuscript postmark and matching "X" cancel on 3¢ ultramarine (114) on 1870 cover to Washington, Pa., Very Fine, an early use from this recently opened office, ex-Bauer.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

The Greeley Post Office was started on April 21st 1870, to serve the postal needs of the new town settled by the New York organized Union Colony. It took its name quite naturally from its sponsor, Horace Greeley, famous editor and owner of the New York Tribune.

THE EARLIEST OF ONLY THREE RECORDED COVERS FROM THIS OFFICE.

The Junction House post office was located just west of where Beaver Creek meets the South Platte River. Only a month after it opened in December 1864 the office found itself encircled by the Arapaho, Cheyenne and Sioux raids which followed the Sand Creek battle. Beaver Creek stage station, five miles away, was burned on January 14, 1865, and on the overland road stage stations and telegraph lines were destroyed for 75 miles down river, all the way past Julesburgh. The Junction House post office became Fort Morgan on July 16, 1866.

This is the earliest of only a few manuscript postmark usages from Kit Carson, known used between March 30th and July 4th, 1870.

The town of Kit Carson was located in Bent county on the eastern plains of Colorado Territory. It was an early Indian trading post and named for the famous frontier scout Christopher Carson.

Rollinsville was located in northern Gilpin county founded by prospectors from Central City area. Frederick Gooch was appointed the first postmaster opening the office on January 31, 1871.
