3841 c 1866, 5c Blue (32).> Tied by large 7-bar grid cancel on cover to Mrs. Frederic Hobbs in Bangor Me. and forwarded to Newburyport Mass., <Forwarded by H. Hackfield & Co. Honolulu H.I.> double-line oval handstamp
on backflap, bold strike of onolulu1866, 5c Blue (32). Tied by large 7-bar grid cancel on cover to Mrs. Frederic Hobbs in Bangor Me. and forwarded to Newburyport Mass., "Forwarded by H. Hackfield & Co. Honolulu H.I." double-line oval handstamp on backflap, bold strike of "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Apr. 3" (1868) circular datestamp, mostly clear strike of red "Hawaiian Steam Service" double-line oval handstamp, "San Francisco Cal. Apr. 16" circular datestamp and duplex cork cancel at lower right, "5" due handstamp (crossed out), used with United States 1861 3c Rose (65), two copies, one at top right cancelled by circle of wedges (San Francisco), other at lower right and tied by "Bangor Me. May. 9" double-circle datestamp and cork, few trivial flaws in 3c stamps

FINE. AN UNUSUAL UNITED STATES AND HAWAIIAN MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH THE "HAWAIIAN STEAM SERVICE" OVAL, APPLIED BY THE SAN FRANCISCO POST OFFICE TO CONTRACT STEAMSHIP MAIL FROM HAWAII.

According to www.hawaiianstamps.com, the "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval was applied regularly to contract letters from November 1867 to August 1869 (there are two later, irregular uses of the marking). This cover was carried on the COMSS Idaho, departing Honolulu on Apr. 3, 1868, and arriving in San Francisco on Apr. 15. The "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands" black datestamp confirms that insufficient or no U.S. postage was affixed at the time of mailing. The "5" cents due marking is incorrect for the contract steamship rate. When or where the 3c stamp at upper right was applied is unclear, but the cancel appears to match the San Francisco duplex. The second 3c stamp at lower right was applied in Bangor to forward the letter to Newburyport. (Image)

1869 yellow cover to Hon. E. H. Allen1866, 5c Blue (32). Horizontal pair and single, used with 2c Rose Vermilion (31), all stamps cancelled by clear strikes of negative "HI" oval, clear "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Sep. 24" circular datestamp on 1869 yellow cover to Hon. E. H. Allen in Bangor Me., "San Francisco Cal. Oct. 23" circular datestamp, docketing at right, some cover toning and barely reduced at left, right stamp with few perf faults at top, Very Fine appearance, carried on the bark Cambridge, departing Honolulu Sep. 24, 1869, arriving Portland Oct. 21, an unusual franking which apparently was an attempt to pre-pay the 5c Hawaiian postage and 10c U.S. postage with Hawaiian stamps, as well as perhaps a 2c ship captain fee which did not apply, it does not appear that any stamps are missing and the pre-payment in Hawaiian stamps was accepted in San Francisco as there are no U.S. due markings, a fascinating cover (Image)
