Allen, in care of Mrs. Frederic Hobbs, Bangor Me., endorsed "E.H.A." (Elisha H. Allen), clear strike of "San Francisco Cal. Dec. 7, 1863" double-circle datestamp with "12" rate handstamp, pencil docketing indicates Oct. 9, 1863 origin date, Very Fine, carried on the Comet, departing Honolulu Nov. 14, 1863, eastbound mail datestamped in SF Dec. 7, neither Charles W. Brooks nor this handstamped forwarding marking are among the Hawaiian mail forwarding agents listed at hawaiianstamps.com, the 1861 San Francisco city directory lists "BROOKS CHARLES W. & CO. ( W. Frank Ladd and Edward F. 3829		Forwarded by McRuer & Merrill, San Francisco. Red oval handstamp on cover from Hawaii to Mrs. Elisha H. Allen, in care of Mrs. Frederic Hobbs, Bangor Me., endorsed "E.H.A." (Elisha H. Allen), "San Francisco Cal. Dec. 7, 1863" double-circle datestamp, stamp removed from upper right but part of cogwheel cancel shows, blue crayon "Due 2", pencil docketing indicates letters dated Nov. 1-14 were enclosed, torn open at left across front of envelope, still a presentable and rare artifact, carried on the Comet, departing Honolulu Nov. 14, 1863, eastbound mail datestamped in SF Dec. 7, the McRuer & Merrill oval is very rare (it is found on the two $4 Black Pony Express covers from Hawaii), this firm is listed in the 1861 Langley San Francisco city directory (Valentine & Co., publishers) as follows: "McRuer (D.) Co. & Merrill (John C.), auction, shipping, and commission merchants, agents Honolulu packets, 117 and 119 California, dwl 18 Laurel Place." 3830		Aldrich, Walker & Co., Shipping & Commission Merchants, Honolulu. Purple double-oval handstamp on back of cover from Hawaii to Mrs. Frederick Hobbs, Bangor Me., "San Francisco Cal. Oct. 28, 1865" double-circle datestamp, bold "SHIP" and "DUE 2" handstamps (very rare rate) with numeral "2" obliterated by target cancel and re-rated in blue crayon "Due 5", stamp at upper right is missing but shows trace of cogwheel cancel, receipt docketing, slightly rough opening at right, Fine, carried on the D. C. 3831		1c Blue, 5c Brown (63, 76). Pairs of each, tied by cogwheel cancels, "San Francisco Cal. Feb. 2, 1864" double-circle datestamp on legal-size blue cover to Mrs. Elisha H. Allen, in care of Mrs. Frederic Hobbs, Bangor Me., endorsed "E.H.A." (Elisha H. Allen), receipt docketing "Honolulu Dec. 12 to Jan. 15, 1864", some edge faults and stains around stamps, which also have small faults, otherwise Fine, apparently forwarded from Honolulu to San Francisco outside the mails and put into the U.S. mail with quadruple 3c postage (this would save 20c Hawaiian postage and 2c ship fee), carried on the A. 3832		2c Black, 3c Rose (65, 73). Tied by cogwheel cancels on small mourning envelope from Hawaii to Bangor Me., addressed in the hand of Elisha H. Allen to Mrs. Allen, care of Mrs. Frederic Hobbs, red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Feb. 27" (1864) circular datestamp, "San Francisco Cal. Mar. 21, 1864" double-circle datestamp, tiny tear at bottom, 2c slightly bent at top from overlapping edge VERY FINE. A RARE USE OF THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK ON HAWAIIAN MAIL, AND ONE OF THE FEW MOURNING ENVELOPES EXTANT. The black-bordered mourning envelope was used by Elisha H. Allen in honor of King Kamehameha IV, who died on November 30, 1863. This was carried on the Hanoverian bark Harburg, departing Honolulu on February 27, 1864, and arriving in San Francisco on March 20. 3833		2c Black, 12c Black (69, 73). 2c has pre-use tear halfway thru stamp, 2c cancelled and 12c tied by cogwheel cancels on cover from Hawaii to Bangor Me., addressed to Mrs. Frederick Hobbs, bold red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Feb. 17" (1866) circular datestamp, "San Francisco Cal. Mar. 12" double-circle datestamp, red crayon "9ct" and "11c" crossed out ("14" beneath stamps), receipt docketing (Feb. 14, 1866, origin and Apr. 7 receipt), the empty cover still shows evidence of thick enclosures, which explains quadruple 3c postage (and 2c ship fee), the crossed-out rate notations indicate some confusion in Honolulu about correct postage VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE 2-CENT BLACK JACK AND 12-CENT 1861 ISSUE FRANKING ON A COVER FROM HAWAII. This was carried on the American bark Smyrniote, departing Honolulu on February 17, 1866, and arriving in San Francisco on March 10 (mail was datestamped March 12).
