EXTREMELY FINE. AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING TETE-BECHE PANE OF TEN OF THE 1864 ONE-CENT HAWAIIAN NUMERAL ON LAID PAPER. ONLY TWO COMPLETE TETE-BECHE PANES ARE KNOWN TO US.
This tete-beche pane is one of four block-size multiples known to us, of which only two are complete panes: 1) pane of ten, ex Caspary, 2) the pane of ten offered here, ex Lilly, 3) block of 19, does not contain a complete pane, ex Honolulu Advertiser, and 4) block of four, ex Honolulu Advertiser. The three multiples containing Type IX (Position 10) show the "Hawaiian Postage" label in its complete first state. Subsequently, most of the letters disappeared, producing the "HA" variety. The label was reset in a different format, and more sheets were printed.
Ex Lilly. Scott Retail as five pairs. (Image)
