#1a, 5c Dark brown, four large margins, deep rich
color, just tied by neat criss-cross pen cancels to an 1847 folded letter,
with a well-struck "Houston/Dec 24/Txs." c.d.s. at bottom left, sent to
Austin, light toning which barely affects adhesive, otherwise very fine;
this is the earliest known usage of any adhesive stamp from Texas, and
one of only six Five Cent 1847 usages from Texas (one being only a
front); this remarkable cover was first discovered among the Ward
correspondence in 1990 and was purchased by the consignor at the Christie's
sale of the Ward correspondence on March 13, 1991; an important cover
for both the 1847 specialist and the collector of Texas postal history;
1990 PF certificate. (Image) |

Interesting and remarkable balance of the Ives correspondence of
Matagorda covers, 26 mostly two- or three-page folded letters from
Matagorda (four are to Matagorda), mostly to New England though we note one
to St. Louis and one to Houston, 1840-1850, includes manuscript postmarks,
three-line handstamps and c.d.s. postmarks, also Galveston oval handstamps
on incoming mail, many with interesting correspondence, generally fine-very
fine; a fascinating lot which covers the postal history of Matagorda from
the Republic period to Statehood. |
