1300 TC 951TC1 image#951TC1, 3c U.S. Frigate Constitution, large die trial color proof on wove paper, in deep blue, die sunk on large card measuring 191x135mm, a handsome engraver signed proof, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, pulled for the vignette engraver, M.D. Fenton, with his signature at the bottom of the proof paper, "C" security punch taped back into place (a normal practice), acetate overleaf taped to the reverse, exceptionally clean and fresh, choice very fine; Scott does not list a trial color for this, but it does list a die proof on India in the issued color, we don't know whether that exists, but we do know that when this was purchased from a John A. Fox auction in 1988 it was listed as a normal die proof, quite certainly the only known example of a trial color proof, but also very possibly the only known die proof in any color; A.H.
