#E13P1, 15c Deep orange, large die proof on
India; die sunk on full size card measuring 203x152mm, an approved
proof signed by Harry S. New, Postmaster General, this being from the
set presented to President Calvin Coolidge, dated March 7, 1925,
another of the Coolidge proofs possessing beautiful pristine condition,
extremely fine; Harry New presented to President Coolidge a set of die
proofs for all the stamps that were issued during the Harding-Coolidge
presidencies; this is a rarer special delivery die proof with only three
approved India proofs reported, plus the unique F.D. Roosevelt proof
without approval on wove; the example offered here is probably the
finest example known; C.A. Huston, designer; L.S. Schofield, vignette
engraver; control number 1319876 (1925); ex-Coolidge.(Image)

#E20P1a, 20c Deep blue, large die proof on wove
paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 203x153mm, Bureau handstamp
on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and
initialed, "C" security punch taped back in place (a normal practice), deep
rich color, trivial edge wrinkle at top, clean and extraordinarily fresh,
extremely fine; listed by Scott only on India, however at this period all
the die proofs appear to have been made only on wove paper and probably
isn't known on India; an extremely rare and undervalued proof with
probably no more than two examples in private hands; V.S. McCloskey,
designer; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 152263B

#F1P1 var., 10c Ultramarine registration stamp, large
die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring
153x203mm, the specially prepared proof for President Franklin D.
Roosevelt, absolutely pristine and extremely fine; an incredibly rare
proof, in addition to being the unique proof prepared for President
Roosevelt, our records do not show any other large die proof other than
this one, even if one did exist it would be on India, being pulled in
1911; the proof offered here may be the only example in private
hands and greatly undervalued as evidenced by the last time this proof
sold in 2004, realizing $5,775.00 (including premium); a spectacular proof
for anyone building an award-winning collection of this interesting stamp;
C.A. Huston, designer, R. Ponickau, vignette engraver; control number

#O121P1, 2c Black Postal Savings Mail, large die

presented to the Hon. Charles D. Hilles, Assistant Secretary of the
Treasury by J.E. Ralph, Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing,
accompanied by a letter to that effect on official stationery; the paper of
this proof is highly unusual being a distinct brown color and wove in a
period when the practice was to produce proofs on India; a very rare proof,
the only other large die proof that we are aware is the F.D. Roosevelt
proof; control number 435476 (1910).(Image)

"Panama-Pacific" small die proofs on wove paper cplt., an enormously
rare complete set, prepared in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition, it
is believed that only three to five sets were printed, with this
being the only set that we have ever seen, the 50c has two tiny and barely
noticeable facial thins in the top margin, otherwise extremely fine; a set
that may not make its appearance again for years.(imagea)(imageb)(Image)

Q1-E
#Q1-E, 1c Parcel Post, celluloid tracing of central
vignette, mounted on white card for display, this particular value had
a very full and complicated illustration for the vignette, so this tracing
is highly detailed and shows the skill of John Eissler, long-time vignette
engraver at the Bureau, celluloid tracings are one step that the engraver
uses in transferring the design from the artist's model to the steel die
exactly as it was intended, break to the celluloid which does not detract
from the tracing, otherwise very fine, a lovely and unique original
celluloid tracing of which very few have survived outside of the Bureau,
especially from the desirable Parcel Post issue; accompanied by bottom left
corner margin block of four of the issued stamp signed by John Eissler;

Q3-E1
#Q3-E1, 3c Parcel Post, large die essay on India,
die sunk on full size card measuring 203x152mm, a lovely engraver signed
essay of an unaccepted design, inscribed as issued on this value
"Railway Postal Clerk", but instead of a clerk in the open door of a rail
car, this rejected design shows a mail truck backed up to the rail car
unloading pouches, actually a very interesting and attractive design that
progressed as far as being fully engraved, inscribed and signed in pencil
at bottom "Engraved by/H.L. Charlton/Bu. of Eng. & Printing/First one
engraved, but cancelled", extremely fine; Scott lists this on wove paper
but large die proofs at this time were being pulled on India (proof paper),
this specific essay is certainly what Scott is listing and greatly
undervalued; quite likely the only example in private hands; a
magnificent essay that is indispensable for an exhibition collection of the
parcel posts; C.A. Huston, designer; H.L. Charlton, vignette engraver;

almost finished engraving of the adopted design, but lacking some of the
shading, most notable in the windows and the cross hatching in the shading
of the car, taped to another card and a small triangle cut out from the
design, a very fine and exceedingly rare essay; this is the specific and
unique essay listed by Scott, which quotes the control number on the
reverse of the proof; C.A. Huston, designer; H.L. Charlton, vignette
engraver; control number 578444 (1913).(Image)

#Q5-E3, 5c Parcel Post, designer's model, essay
of the design that was adopted, very similar to the previous model,
consisting of a photo of a wash drawing, with the "5" numerals now painted
in with black ink and white wash so that the numeral are white on a black
background, the pouch crane along side the track is revised in black ink,
plus there is wash touch up on the vignette and frame, mounted on thick
grey card measuring 94x90mm, hand inscribed and signed at bottom "Approved
Nov. 19, 1912/Frank H. Hitchcock/Postmaster General", very fine; a lovely
and unique essay that was approved for production; this approved

Q5-E var.
#Q5-E var. 5c Mail Train vignette, large die essay on
India, in issued carmine, die sunk on full size card measuring 202x151
with untrimmed India around the die area, the adopted vignette for this
value with a square of the India cut away removing the frame and leaving
just the vignette, card is fresh and attractive, extremely fine; this proof
was undoubtedly pulled for vignette engraver, C.M. Chalmers, producing a
most unusual essay very similar to the listed #567-E2 and 568-E2 essays
(see lots 1391-1392 and for similar 75c Parcel Post see lot 1476), Gary
Griffith speculated that the vignette engraver, Charles Chalmers, was given
proofs of stamps that he had engraved and that the frames were removed so
that he could show examples of his vignette engraving, this is the only
example of this essay that we are aware; C.A. Huston, designer; C.M.
Chalmers, vignette engraver; control number 559207 (1912); 1972 PF
certificate.(Image)

#Q7-E2, 15c Parcel Post, large die essay on
India, cut down to small die size measuring 40x27mm, with original card
backing, in issued carmine color, a finished engraving as issued except the
inscription under the vignette reads "Collection Service", rather than
"Automobile Service" as was issued, nice even margins, fresh with radiant
color, very fine; this essay when discovered was assumed to be a small die
proof on wove paper because of its appearance, nevertheless it is on India
and most certainly from a large die proof, not only is this the only
known example of this unaccepted design, but Doolittle, who reported
this essay, could find in his research no record of the change on the
record card for the die or in the files of the Bureau; an absolutely
essential essay for a specialized collection of the Parcel Posts; C.A.

color, a finished engraving that was produced from an approved model
showing the barns closer with much more prominent silos, small thin spots
and trivial blue ink specks in the top margin, all of which are of little
significance to this extremely rare essay, very fine appearance; this
small die essay and a large die essay on India are the only examples of
this essay that we are aware; Scott's listing is for this small size
proof; C.A. Huston, designer; M.M. Baldwin, vignette engraver.(Image)

design from the artist's model to the steel die exactly as it was intended,
