Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1481 E Q11-E var. image#Q11-E var. 75c Harvesting vignette, large die essay on India, in issued carmine, die sunk on full size card measuring 202x152 with untrimmed India around the die area, the adopted vignette for this value with a square of the India cut away removing the frame and leaving just the vignette, card is quite fresh and attractive with just a faint band of toning at top, choice very fine; this proof was undoubtedly pulled for vignette engraver, C.M. Chalmers, producing a most unusual essay very similar to the listed #567-E2 and 568-E2 essays (see lots 1391-1392 and for similar 5c Parcel Post see lot 1476), Gary Griffith speculated that the vignette engraver, Charles Chalmers, was given proofs of stamps that he had engraved and that the frames were removed so that he could show examples of his vignette engraving, this is the only example of this essay that we are aware; C.A. Huston, designer; C.M. Chalmers, vignette engraver; control number 561001 (1912); ex-Doolittle, Bothamley. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

1482 E Q12-E1 image#Q12-E1, $1.00 Parcel Post, designer's model, essay of the design for the 25c consisting of a photo of a wash drawing showing factories as adopted for that value, with the "1" numerals and "Dollar" painted in with black ink and white wash, also touched up with wash in the vignette area, mounted on thick grey card measuring 104x86mm, hand inscribed and signed at bottom "Approved Oct. 12, 1912/Frank H. Hitchcock/Postmaster General", very fine; a unique essay that was proposed but approved for another value; C.A. Huston, designer. (Image) $2,500.00

SOLD for $2,100.00

1483 P Q1P1-12P1 var. image#Q1P1-12P1 var., 1c-$1.00 Parcel Posts, large die proofs on wove paper complete, die sunk on full size cards measuring 202x152mm, the specially prepared set of proofs for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, an attractive and clean set as typically found with the Roosevelt proofs, only the 1c value has a small corner crease to the card at bottom right, extremely fine; all the F.D. Roosevelt proofs are on wove paper, that fact alone is enough to make this set unique because any die proofs of this set being printed in 1912-13 would be on India, but in addition to that, our records show that there are only a few other die proofs of some of the values that have come into public hands through engravers, to our knowledge this is the only complete set of large die proofs of this impressive issue in public hands; this together with its stellar condition makes it a must for anyone building an award-winning collection of the Parcel Post issue; C.A. Huston, designer; J. Eissler, H.L Charlton, M.B, Baldwin, C.M. Chalmers & L.S. Schofield, vignette engravers; control numbers in order of denomination 330441, 330242, 330476, 330405, 330428, 330531, 330519, 330543, 330453, 330394, 330419, 330464 (1933); ex-F.D. Roosevelt. (Image) $16,800.00

1484 P Q3P1 image#Q3P1, 3c Parcel Post, large die proof on India, die sunk on full size card measuring 203x151mm with untrimmed India proof paper, an attractive and extremely rare engraver signed die proof, inscribed and signed in pencil at bottom "Engraved by/H.L. Charlton/Bureau of Engraving & Printing", exceptionally well preserved and fresh, extremely fine; our records show only one full set of the the Parcel Posts, being the F.D. Roosevelt set, other individual die proofs of specific values apparently only appear when brought out of the Bureau by the engraver as was the case with this proof; it is quite probable that this is the only other die proof in private hands and is especially desirable as an engraver signed proof which are rarely found; C.A. Huston, designer; H.L. Charlton, vignette engraver; control number 578857 (1913). (Image) $1,400.00+

SOLD for $2,200.00

Charlton/Bureau of Engraving & Printing", quite fresh with only slight edge wear causing slightly rounded corners, very fine and exceptionally choice; our records show that this is very likely the only known large die proof in private hands, (Image) $1,400.00+

SOLD for $1,350.00

1487 P Q10P1 image#Q10P1, 50c Parcel Post, large die proof on India, die sunk on full size card measuring 201x153mm with untrimmed India proof paper, an exceptionally rare engraver's proof, on the reverse is penciled "Baldwin", the vignette engraver, overall quite fresh with only some light stains at the very corners of the India, very fine and exceptionally choice; we are aware of no other large die proof of this value in private hands, other than the one on wove paper in the President F.D. Roosevelt set; C.A. Huston, designer; M.M. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control number 570609 (1913). (Image) $1,400.00

SOLD for $1,200.00

1488 P Q8P2 image#Q8P2, 20c Parcel Post, small die proof on wove paper, though the paper is actually more of a fibrous bond (like the 50c essay), measuring 42x30mm, it appears as if it had been mounted on a card similar to the Roosevelt proofs, with small thins and creasing, very fine appearance; extremely rare proof, C.A. Huston, designer; H.L. Charlton, vignette engraver. (Image) $1,200.00

SOLD for $575.00

1489 P Q1P2a-12P2a image#Q1P2a-12P2a, 1c-$1.00 Parcel Posts, "Panama-Pacific" small die proofs on wove paper cplt., an enormously rare complete set of these seldom offered proofs, prepared in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition, it is believed that only three to five sets were printed, with this being the only set that set we have ever seen, having first offered it in our October 2002 sale of the Merrill Bothamley collection of Parcel Posts, all with strong colors and impressions, some values with typical translucent spots due to hinging, 50c with small translucent inclusion speck, overall very fine; another highly important proof set of the 20th century for either the proof or Parcel Post specialist; C.A. Huston, designer; J. Eissler, H.L Charlton, M.B, Baldwin, C.M. Chalmers & L.S. Schofield, vignette engravers; ex-Bothamley. (imagea) (Image) $14,400.00

1490 E Q12a-E var. -Q12g-E var. image#Q12a-E var-Q12g-E var., 1c-15c Second Parcel Post issue, designer's models cplt., the unique set of seven models that were approved but never adopted for a second parcel post issue, each consists of a photo of a wash drawing with a numeral denomination added to the center, then pen and wash details and touch-ups were added to the design as needed, some with very little added and others with much more, such as the 1c value with "Cent" completely drawn in black ink and white wash, each is mounted on thick grey card measuring about 98x88mm, hand inscribed and signed at bottom "Approved April 25, 1912/A.S. Burleson/Postmaster General", very fine.Though collectors today consider the issued Parcel Post set some of the most beautiful United States stamps, there was actually criticism of them at the time. Thus, this rather plain design was proposed and at least these values were actually approved by the Postmaster General. This new set actually had twelve values like the old, whether models were approved for the other values is not known because they are not known in public hands. The project went as far as producing dies for these seven values and apparently an unfinished 20c value. Ultimately the project was discontinued because of dissatisfaction over the sameness of the designs. However, in 1917 this basic design was eventually adopted for use with Documentary revenue stamps. The group of essays offered here are all unique and highly important to any specialized collection of the Parcel Post Issue. (Image) Est. 5,000-7,500

1491 E Q12a-E1-Q12g-E1 image#Q12a-E 1-Q12g-E1, 1c-15c Second Parcel Post issue, die proofs on India, the complete set of all seven values of which the dies were completed from the approved models in the above lot, these have the appearance of small die proofs measuring 27x29mm, all on original card backing and it is likely that these were originally made as large die proofs, all have bright strong colors as listed in Scott, very fine; ultimately this rejected design for Parcel Posts was adopted for the 1917 offset Documentary revenues; this is believed to be the only known set of these interesting printed essays according to Johl and others; an outstanding showpiece for a Parcel Post exhibit; ex-Johl, Southgate, Doolittle.
