1135 E 702-E1 image#702-E1, 2c Red Cross, large die essay on wove paper, in black, the engraving of the entire design without the red cross, but including the faint engraved outline of the cross in black, die sunk on large card measuring 120x142mm, showing the full die sinkage, exceptionally clean, extremely fine; this is from the John Eissler collection of proofs, John Eissler was a vignette engraver at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the proofs that were in his collection are large die proofs characterized by having the original blue control number removed and a black five-digit number applied; this impressive essay is most probably the only example in private hands; a wonderful essay for both the U.S. collector and the Red Cross collector; C.A. 1136 P 702P1a image#702P1a var., 2c Red Cross, large die proof on wove paper, the India of this proof shows all the registration marks and measures 78x88mm being a large portion of the die area, this is the special proof prepared for H.M. Southgate, usually these are characterized by not being card mounted, this is the only one we have seen that is with card measuring 152x203mm, we know that it is the Southgate proof because the control number is applied to the front at the bottom of the India, though it may have been mounted on the card later, very attractive and very fine; a rare large die proof being the only one prepared for H.M.
