D. Arm./Saintes/3 Avril 73" octagonal military postmark, Basse Terre transit on the reverse, carried via French packet with red St. Nazaire entry transit, black boxed "PD" handstamp and military endorsement at top right, backstamped Brest, opened a bit roughly with small piece missing from the backflap and rounded corner to the cover at top left, otherwise very fine; the military concessionary rate was changed in January 1872 from 20c to 25c and this would require a very late use of the Eagle issue to make this rate; evidently the tiny post office at Saintes had an unused stock of this issue resulting in the colorful franking of this cover; the combination of this franking used out of the tiny office of Santes and receiving this extraordinarily rare military cancel produces one of the great military rarities of Guadeloupe; it is believed that only two Eagle covers are known from this office with this military marking; this being the finer of the two; ex-Levett. D. Arm./Pte a Pitre/10 Avril 78" octagonal military postmark with an additional clear strike at left, carried on a French packet with military packet transit of Line "A" on the reverse and military endorsement, backstamped Orleans, trace of mild aging to the cover, very fine; this cover is in the transitional U.P.U. period when the normal packet rate to France was 40c for 15 grams; while Pointe-a-Pitre was the commercial center of Guadeloupe and many more covers originated there than at Basse Terre, that is not the case with military covers, which largely originated in Basse Terre, this military posting from Pointe-a-Pitre is decidedly rarer and seldom seen. III, two singles on 1875 military cover from Guadeloupe, properly endorsed on the reverse as a military cover and designated to go by French packet, the two French stamps were in fact the full 50c rate for the packet service or double the military concessionary rate of 25c, being French stamps the Basse Terre post office did not accept them and crossed them off as invalid with pen marks, then marked "4" decimes handstamp due, the unpaid single military rate, rare black "Corr. D. Arm./Basse-Terre/9 Aout 75" octagonal military postmark at left, blue St. Nazaire packet entry transit also ties the stamps and apparently the officials there overturned the Guadeloupe decision marking the cover paid with matching blue "PD" boxed handstamp and crossed off the due marking, very fine; French stamps were not normally valid used in the colonies and that is the reason the Basse Terre officials did not accept them, however there may have been an exception for military use and at least that is the way the French officials handled it; an extraordinarily rare example of French stamps being used to prepay a military cover; this extremely rare piece of colonial postal history is a great rarity for both the Guadeloupe collector and the collectors of this popular French stamp. D. Armees/Saintes T.D.H./20 Mars 79" octagonal military postmark, however no postage was paid, which was not allowed even on military correspondence at this period, so the cover was marked due with a "5" decimes handstamp in blue for double the 25c U.P.U. regular non-military rate, matching blue St. Nazaire entry transit, backstamped Nice, edge tear to cover at top, fine; military covers from the Saintes Islands are especially rare but this military postmark of Terre de Haut is one of only two examples recorded; ex-Dubus.
