885 King Kamehameha IV documents signed, collection of eight 1853-57 Hawaiian language Royal Patents, five of the earlier smaller size and three in the large format, each with black negative royal seal on the front inscribed "Royal Stamp", all are signed "Kamehameha" by the King along with the signature of his sister, Princess Victoria K. Kaahumanu, the Prime Minister (Kuhina Nui), two have this less commonly seen full signature, the rest are signed by the more usual "Kaahumanu", each with royal wax seal or embossed colorless arms seal, condition is very mixed, several of the small size are intact but with fold separation, others are completely separated into several pieces, plus most with toning, nevertheless eight popular royal signatures. The islands of Mokumoa, Mokuonini and Mokuoeo are a part of Moanalua and are included in the above area." $1.00 Black revenue stamp (#R3) at top left, dated August 28, 1890 and signed "Kalakaua Rex" by the King along with the signature of "C.N. Spencer", Minister of the Interior, well impressed embossed royal arms applied to large red adhesive seal next to the signatures, the document has spindle punch holes around the edges at right and left and some excellent reinforcement of separation along the folds, still attractive and very fine for this type of document; this is an important historical land grant of the Damon Estate as it consists of a large portion his land holdings of Moanalua and was used in the First Circuit Court as Plaintiff's Exhibit "A" in a court action of Samuel M. Damon and his wife giving the small island of Mokuoeo to the King on his birthday, includes a letter dated November 14, 1885 which reads "We take the happy occasion of your Majesty's birthday to present our respects and ask that the enclosed deed of the Island of Mokuoeo may be accepted with our best wishes for many returns of the day. Praying for the welfare of your Majesty in the years to come." and signed "S.M. Damon" and "H.M. Damon, includes the deed of the same date also signed by them, later an 1889 mortgage was transacted by HRH Kalakaua with Peter Dalton and signed "Kalakaua" as an individual, the latter two documents with two or three $1.00 Black revenues (#R3) respectively, other documents include an 1883 government lease for the island and an 1885 surveyor's report of the island, all are fine-very fine, the mortgage and autograph of the king are especially nice; Mokuoeo Island was a small island of eleven acres in an inlet of Sand Island in Honolulu harbor, the island no longer exists as it probably filled in and became part of Sand Island; the King's signature is particularly rare and desirable signed as an individual as most of his autographs exist as official royal signatures on royal patents. 894 King Kalakaua documents signed, collection of four 1874-80 Royal Patents including one on a bilingual form, deeding land in Moanalua or Honolulu, all but one have a negative black royal seal inscribed "Royal Stamp", the one without seal has two #R2 tied, all are signed "Kalakaua R" by the King along with the signatures of various ministers of the interior (at least thirteen different individuals served as Minister of the Interior during Kalakaua reign, some more than once) including "Herman A. Widemann", a prominent plantation owner that served as minister for a short period in 1874, also includes an accompanying letter signed by him, all but that patent have embossed arms applied next to the signatures, condition is rather mixed, three are largely intact though with considerable fold separation, the one with revenue stamps is separated in pieces and worn, though the section with the royal signature is quite fresh, fine. Bishop to be a "Member of Our Privy Council of State", the document is dated March 7, 1891 in the first year of the her reign shortly after her ascension to the throne and signed "Liliuokalani" by the Queen, also signed "Samuel Parker", Minister of Foreign Affairs, the document is headed by the royal arms with a green background and possesses an embossed royal arms on a large red adhesive seal, all making for a beautiful document for framing, choice very fine; the Privy Council of State was a group of a monarch's closest advisors that gave confidential advice on matters of state, which testifies to the high regard that Charles Bishop enjoyed among the royalty of Hawaii; a wonderful autograph of Queen Liliuokalani and heirloom of the Bishop family. Bishop, was the great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I, on his deathbed Kamehameha V offered to name her his successor to the throne but she declined, in 1883 when her cousin, Princess Ruth, died she became heiress to most of the Kamehameha lands which amounted to about nine per cent of the area of the Hawaiian Islands, despite the resulting business dealings and her charitable activities her autograph is very rare and much scarcer than her husband's who lived much longer, also many of her papers were destroyed in a fire; a rare and attractive document with the signatures of these famous Hawaiians.
