Dowsett" and "S.M. Damon", fresh and very fine document; James Dowsett was a prominent business man in Hawaii who was a leader in developing the whaling industry in the islands and owned a fleet of whaling ships that made annual forays into the Arctic, but that was only one of his business interests being involved in lumber and cattle, as well as being active in politics as a member of the House of Nobles. for 55 years describes the conditions under which the land is lHoapili important 1839 document signed, Hawaiian language lease by Hoapili (Ulumaheihei) to William Sumner described therein for "the Plains and Mountains of Moanalua" this lease for 55 years describes the conditions under which the land is leased, how local residents can go on it for various purposes and how the cattle of Mr. Sumner will be protected, dated November 6, 1839 and signed "Hoapili", as well as signed "Kamehameha III" by the King along with his rare royal wax seal, also signed "William Sumner", remarkably well preserved for a document of this age with only mild aging and minor fold separation, otherwise very fine; Hoapili was an honored chief and closely connected to the royal family, he was the most trusted advisor of Kamehameha I and entrusted with hiding the dead king's bones; William Sumner was a ship captain and sailed ships for the king for which he received favorable treatment for land; an extremely rare early document with highly elusive and important autographs and of particular historical significance to the Moanalua valley; accompanied by several related 19th century documents including two English translations of the lease one of which is not far from being contemporaneous. Wilcox", quite clean and attractive, very fine; a descendent of Maui royalty, Wilcox was the military firebrand of the Hawaiian Islands known as the "Iron Duke of Hawaii" and often looked on as both hero and villain, he was trained at the Royal Military Academy in Turin, Italy, shortly after his return to Hawaii as a loyalist to the Monarchy he led a rebellion against the Constitution of 1887, he was tried for treason but was acquitted when he claimed he had acted with the King's sanction, later after Queen Liliuokalani was deposed he led an abortive counter-revolution and was condemned to death, a sentence that was commuted to 35 years in prison by President Dole, but he and his rebels were pardoned within a few months and he was elected the first delegate to Congress under the Territory of Hawaii; a rare signed document by this interesting individual. 939 1853-1866 Black Royal Stamp documents, collection of eleven land conveyance documents with this handsome black negative Crown handstamp inscribed "Royal Stamp" (M-H #405), the earliest is an 1853 Warranty Deed with the seal being in the interior of a bilingual Hawaiian/English printed form rather than in the upper left corner as usual, also includes a mortgage deed with two strikes of the seal, once when the instrument was instituted and another when the mortgage was released, plus another deed that was certified with the signature of "G.M. Robertson", Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, some age stains, usually along the document folds as is typical of this period, overall fine-very fine and an excellent selection of these early and popular documents.
